Is composite bonding right for me? 6 questions to ask

By Dr Mohammad Abbasi, DMD, AFCGDent. 12 October 2026

Composite bonding is popular because it is quick and conservative, but it is not right for everyone. These questions help you prepare for your consultation.

1. Are my teeth and gums healthy?

Decay and gum disease need treating first. Bonding goes on healthy teeth.

2. Are my teeth reasonably straight?

Bonding can disguise small irregularities. Larger crowding usually needs straightening first, or the bonding may look bulky.

3. Do I want my teeth whiter?

Composite does not whiten, so whitening is normally done first and the bonding matched to the new shade.

4. Do I grind or clench?

Grinding is one of the biggest risks to bonding. A night guard is usually recommended.

5. Am I happy to maintain it?

Bonding usually needs polishing and occasional repairs over the years.

6. Would veneers suit me better?

For heavily discoloured teeth or bigger shape changes, porcelain can be the better long-term option. Compare the two.
